Town of Newburgh Board won't support Genting casino plan
A casino operator's dash to line up a backup resort site in the Town of Newburgh appeared dashed Friday, when Acting Town Supervisor Gil Piaquadio announced "not even one" Town Board member supported Genting America's play for an 86-acre property off Route 17K.
Genting already has proposed a casino resort in Tuxedo and secured that Town Board's support, but has faced some opposition and hoped to secure an alternative site, as well. A major hurdle for its Tuxedo proposal is getting approval for a new Thruway interchange to channel traffic to the resort site.
Facing a June 30 deadline to enter a heated competition for a state casino license, Genting representatives met Sunday with homeowners in the Colden Park section of Newburgh to gauge support for a resort behind the Pilot Travel Center.
According to Piaquadio's news release Friday, reactions from Colden Park residents were mixed, but board members were uniformly opposed. His board already has supported a rival resort proposal by Saratoga Casino and Raceway, which has a 70-acre site on Route 17K, near the Thruway and Interstate 86.
In his statement Friday, Piaquadio said board members agreed the New York-based operator they already endorsed had "the best location," and that "competition between two casinos would only divide public support in the municipality and lesson the possibility of either one being awarded a license."
