Speaker: 'Tough decisions' on budget could be required if casino law repealed

BOSTON — House Speaker Robert DeLeo says state budget officials and lawmakers would have to make some "tough decisions" if voters repeal the casino gambling law in November.
DeLeo told reporters on Wednesday that the proposed state budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 assumes $54 million in licensing revenue from the casino law. That money would not be realized if voters repealed the 2011 law which allows for up to three resort casinos and one slots parlor.
The state's highest court ruled on Tuesday that casino opponents can go forward with a proposed ballot question that seeks to outlaw casino gambling.
DeLeo says a repeal vote could necessitate budget cuts. The Democratic speaker has been a strong supporter of the casino law.
