Taunton: Getting held up by Mashpee Wampanogs

Failing to ask the right questions or question this "Something for Nothing Scheme," Taunton residents are about to get screwed!

Thank you, Governor Slot Barns!

From: Cin An
Some supporters of the Taunton casino have been characterized as being from "labor unions" who want jobs - that's worthwhile and merits discussion. Unfortunately dealing with sovereign Indian tribes comes with challenges when it comes to labor disputes and holding the tribe to labor specific commitments that rank and files union job seekers should understand before lending their support. Let's help educate them.

In addition to this good summary of the current state of labor law and Indian tribes, I'll post some other articles below that may be good references when discussing these issues with union members supporting the casino.

Jobs without justice

Maybe I'll never get the connection, but just because a "LEADER" says it, doesn't make it so.

From the beginning, when Middleboro was targeted and promised streets paved with gold, it was baffling that LABOR/UNIONS supported low wage dead ends jobs.

How is it possible that so many can blindly follow and willingly accept untruths?

It's even more baffling when this gets included in SHNS (no link available):

Haynes added fuel to the debate, urging DeLeo not to let the argument over "1,000 potential extra slot machines" at racetracks kill the prospect of 15,000 casino jobs - a figure gambling opponents dispute.

Bobby, let's be honest. There are no 15,000 jobs!

From
What’s the big hurry?

We are told that two casinos and four racinos will net about 16,000 construction
and permanent jobs. But in Indiana it takes 10 riverboats, one casino and two
racinos to generate 16,000 current jobs and Louisiana requires 18 casinos to
employ 17,268, according to the American Gaming Association.

The states that most closely mirror the current legislation suggest that the real results will be but a fraction of the job estimates we have been hearing. Michigan’s
three casinos net 8,568 permanent jobs and New Mexico’s five racinos employ less
than 2,000 people.

This from a friend, labor supporter and life-long Democrat:

It is incredible that LABOR ends up carrying the water for the Gambling
Industry, the very industry that will exploit the working family through its
predatory practices. The $ lost comes primarily from blue collar households.
If the best that Labor Union leaders can do for their members is spend most
of their energy bringing slot machines to Ma. while ignoring the consequences to
the worker, we need some new Labor Unions Leaders.

They are leaving the state (and their members), an ugly legacy...Jobs Without Justice!!!

It is a sad labor day for Massachusetts.
I am sending a Letter to the Editors for the Herald with those thoughts, we'll see if they print it.
