Mega-billionaire Sheldon Adelson is a reminder that even the devil can quote scripture.
He has acquired a $36 billion fortune by catering to the human cravings for casino gambling and illicit or promiscuous sex. As the advertising jingle goes, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

In Dante’s Inferno, gambling lands you in the fourth circle of hell, while lust lands you in circle two.
These vices routinely destroy or impoverish families. Children are left without proper role models or support.

In 2013, Mr. Adelson’s operations extracted more than $13 billion from the pockets of adults to gratify sordid pleasures. The Venetian alone in Las Vegas corrupts 50,000 patrons daily.

The casino billionaire is the last person on the planet qualified to sermonize about business morality — indistinguishable from Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich crooning about the virtues of marital fidelity.

But his craving for wealth by any means is beyond embarrassment. Consider the following spectacle.
Mr. Adelson’s casino riches could be diminished if the current legal restraints on Internet gambling are relaxed or eliminated. In the manner of a deathbed conversion, Mr. Adelson is preaching against competition for casinos in the guise of a belated passion for moral virtue but in reality to preserve his opulence.

He has pontificated: “My moral standard compels me to speak out on this issue because I am the largest company by far in the industry and I am willing to speak out. I don’t see any compelling reason for the government to allow people to gamble on the Internet and nobody has ever explained except for the two companies whose special interest is going to be served if there is gaming on the Internet, Caesar and MGM.”

True enough. There is no compelling reason for Internet gambling. But there is equally no compelling reason for casino gambling and sister debaucheries. The nation would profit if both were discouraged or stigmatized. Gambling does not gain in its depravity by its movement from the casino floor to an Internet cafe.

Mr. Adelson insists that he would never enter the business of Internet gambling — no matter how profitable — because “it’s a moral issue for me. If a stockholder said to me ‘your morality can’t count when it comes to making money for shareholders,’ I see it from a business point as very harmful to all the companies that go into it.”

Does Mr. Adelson think we were born yesterday? He is refraining from Internet gambling not because of moral scruples — assuming he has any — but because he believes it’s a losing business proposition.

He taxes our credulity even more by arguing that his opposition to Internet gambling pivots on his weeping concern for the young, the indigent, and alcohol and drug addicts. He suggests he is traumatized by the propsect that they will squander money online that they cannot afford to lose. In contrast, Mr. Adelson insinuates, his land-based casinos vet patrons for their financial ability to withstand gambling losses. Only a dunce would believe that.

Mr. Adelson is an improbable candidate for sympathizing with the poor. He revels in ostentation. He owns several private jets, including a Boeing 747. He supported Republian Mitt Romney’s bid for the presidency, along with his sneering assertion that 47 percent of the people are sponges who believe they are entitled to a cushy life at government expense.

When Mr. Adelson descends from his bejeweled moral pedestral, his ulterior motives become apparent. He maintains that online gambling is “suicidal” for the U.S. casino industry in the long run and will destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs. (Here, Mr. Adelson sounds like the reactionary Luddites who opposed the introduction of labor-saving machinery for the identical reason.)

Mr. Adelson also preaches that his online casino gambling oppostion derives from his worries as a concerned father, grandfather, citizen, and patriot for the general welfare. But his lavish support for the morally odious Mr. Gingrich in his 2012 presidential fling discredits Mr. Adelson’s claim that his life is dicatated by moral concerns. Ditto for locating his prime casinos in Las Vegas, which is synonymous with sin, not piety.

The casino mogul should stick to making money.

There is no role for him in a morality play.

There are a bunch of amusing comments worth reading.....

Sheldon is busy fleecing the Chinese over in Macau and Singapore where all the real money is. Then he has all the Republicans to Las Vegas in the Sands on their knees groveling for campaign contributions-even Dick "the hunter" Cheney! If this isn't funny I don't know what is! Meyer Lansky could never have dreamed!!!! Sinatra's revenge?(the "government" made Sinatra give up his shares of the Sands then held hearings about his ties to Sam Giancana) Las Vegas is small potatoes now and a dump in a miserable desert. Good thing they have military bases around or they would dry up and blow away. If they would let Minnesota pipe water there it might have a future.

Las Vegas Sands Corp, which is owned by U.S. billionaire Sheldon Adelson, signed a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department on Monday, agreeing to pay $47.4 million in fines stemming from a money laundering investigation.

For business tycoon Sheldon Adelson it is the equivalent of salt in the wound.

After spending millions to try and thwart President Barack Obama’s reelection in 2012, Adelson’s
Las Vegas casino empire agreed this week to pay the U.S. government $47.4 million in fines to avoid criminal charges stemming from a money laundering investigation.

Las Vegas Sands Corp., which owns the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino, agreed to the settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday night.

For two years, the Justice Department gathered evidence showing that Chinese-Mexican businessman Zhenli Ye Gon had deposited $45 million in suspected drug money to the Venetian in 2006 and 2007 in a series of complex transactions designed to avoid detection.
Federal law requires that suspicious deposits be reported to U.S. authorities, but Ye Gon was the casino’s best customer, losing more than $90 million at the Venetian’s tables.

Chinese-born businessman Zhenli Ye Gon, who lost more than $90 million at Adelson's Venetian casino, deposited $45 million directly to the casino in 2006 and 2007 in transactions designed to avoid detection.

Chinese-born businessman Zhenli Ye Gon, who lost more than $90 million at Adelson's Venetian casino, deposited $45 million directly to the casino in 2006 and 2007 in transactions designed to avoid detection.

“For the first time, a casino has faced the very real possibility of a federal criminal case for failing to properly report suspicious funds received from a gambler,” U.S. Attorney André Birotte Jr., who represents the Central District of California, said in a statement.

“This is also the first time a casino has agreed to return those funds to the government,” Birotte said.

“All companies, especially casinos, are now on notice that America’s anti-money laundering laws apply to all people and every corporation, even if that company risks losing its most profitable customer.”

In his statement, Birotte said that the Sands admitted “in hindsight that it failed to fully appreciate the suspicious nature of the information or lack thereof pertaining to Ye Gon.”

While the fine is significant, many investors had anticipated that the Sands would have to settle for an even larger amount. Adelson, who is the CEO and chairman of Las Vegas Sands Corp., has a net worth of more than $20 billion.

The Sands is not out of the woods yet, however. The Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission are still conducting a separate investigation into whether the casino empire—which owns resorts in resorts in Macau, Singapore and Pennsylvania—may have violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported.

Sands agrees to settlement in Vegas money laundering deal

As the Florida Senate completes plans to embark on a statewide road show to discuss the future of gambling in Florida, one of the most active players in the quest to bring resort casinos to Florida -- Las Vegas Sands -- has withstood some rocky publicity this week.

According to the Wall Street Journal, and other news sources, the casino giant has agreed to pay more than $47 million and will accept U.S. Department of Justice's assertion that the company failed to report suspcicious financial activity by a customer who dealt only in cash, and who was later identified as a drug kingpin.

A Sands spokesman told the Wall Street Journal in its Wednesday papers that, "The company cooperated fully in the investigation, and that effort was recognized clearly by the government."

Under the agreement reviewed by the WSJ, Sands has agreed to refrain from using generic names on its customer accounts and must also conduct two years of reviews of its anti-money laundering policies and file periodic reports with the government.

The federal settlement is part of a two-year probe into possible money-laundering at the Sands, the newspaper reported. Investigators at the U.S. Treasury and Justice Department have been concerned that the practices may have enabled some of the casino's most lucrative customers to gamble using proceeds from illegal activities, federal officials said.

Sands officials also disclosed in its annual report in March that after an internal probe into its casino operations in Macau, the company probably violated the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Preying on others

Earning his gazillions by preying on others, in addition to generously funding first Newt Gingrich, the thrice married family values hypocrite, the supercilious Mitt, covertly contributing to Super PACs and other extremist causes, the gazillionaire provided a pittance of his wealth to medical research.

Interesting revelations ----

Sheldon Adelson's anti-cancer campaign

Nation's top super PAC donor also quietly funneling millions to medical research
By

May 9, 2013

As casino mogul Sheldon Adelson buoyed Republican politicians with unprecedented riches, he quietly funded warfare on a decidedly apolitical enemy: cancer.

Adelson and his wife personally fueled their little-known private foundation — The Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Medical Research Foundation — with about $4.3 million during 2011, according to documents filed with the Internal Revenue Service.

The Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Medical Research Foundation in turn disseminated most of the money to more than a dozen hospitals, laboratories and universities for medical research into cancer, as well as inflammatory bowel disease and neural repair and rehabilitation, IRS documents indicate.

Donation recipients in 2011 include The Rockefeller University in New York ($500,000), Tel Aviv University in Israel ($457,608), Harvard Medical School ($280,328), the UCLA Foundation ($280,000) and Johns Hopkins University ($200,000).

Such money is a fraction of the more than $93 million the Adelsons bestowed on pro-Republican super PACs during 2011 and 2012, ahead of last year's national elections. Nearly half of that amount went to a pair of conservative powerhouses: American Crossroads, the super PAC co-founded by Karl Rove received $23 million, while pro-Mitt Romney super PAC Restore Our Future took in $20 million.

But Adelson's medically focused giving further illuminates the complex and diverse donation habits of the nation's top super PAC patron, whose Las Vegas Sands gambling empire has made him one of the world's most wealthy individuals.

Consider that the Adelsons also operate a much larger, separate nonprofit foundation, the Adelson Family Foundation, that's contributed $191 million to primarily pro-Israel and Jewish cultural, educational and research organizations. Most went to Birthright Israel, a charity that offers free 10-day trips to Israel to Jews between age 18 and 26.

Yet another Adelson-led 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Educational Institute, funds an "extensive secular and Judaic studies curriculum" for school-aged children at the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Educational Campus in Las Vegas.

The educational foundation's latest filing with the IRS shows it raised more than $8 million from July 2011 to June 2012, although it doesn't state where the money came from. The organization reported more than $48 million in assets but more than $49 million in liabilities, leaving it about $800,000 in the red through last June, according to its IRS filing.

Meanwhile, the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Charitable Trust, which is also a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, had nearly $80 million in assets through the end of 2011, IRS filings show. Most of the more than $19.4 million it spent that year went to other Adelson-controlled foundations.

But the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Charitable Trust did report giving $500,000 in 2011 to the George W. Bush Foundation, which funded the design and construction of the newly opened George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum near Dallas.

The Las Vegas-based Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Clinic for Drug Abuse Treatment & Research Inc., likewise organized as a nonprofit charity, reported about $133,000 in net assets through the end of 2011, IRS records show.

Funding Drug Abuse Research while earning his fortune creating Gambling Addiction?

As for the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Medical Research Foundation, it's taken in about $58.9 million — mostly from the Adelsons themselves — from its formation in mid-2006 through the end of 2011. It spent about $58.5 million during the same time period, according to IRS records.

After spending more than $24.4 million in 2007, the research foundation's giving has waned, dropping to $4.2 million in 2010 before inching up in 2011.

Sheldon Adelson's office in Las Vegas directed questions to Kenneth Fasman, the foundation's chief science officer, who declined to comment on the Massachusetts-based foundation's work and finances during 2012 and 2013.

"The Adelsons prefer a relatively low profile in this area," Fasman said.

The foundation's website offers some general details on its purpose and mission.

"Instead of funding individual experiments that cautiously advance progress, we ask investigators who receive funding to interact with peers at many institutions within the context of creative and risk-taking approaches that may yield much more than the incremental progress engendered by many funding organizations," it states.

Adelson gave $40 million to super PACs in final weeks of election

Adelson gave $40 million to super PACs in final weeks of election

December 21, 2012

By Michael Beckel and Andrea Fuller

Billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and family poured nearly $40 million into the coffers of GOP-aligned super PACs In the final three weeks of the 2012 campaign, bringing their total giving to the groups to more than $93 million.

Adelson ranks as the top donor to the outside spending groups by a wide margin, according to a Center for Public Integrity analysis of campaign finance records.

The unlimited donations, which are used primarily to fund candidate attack ads, concern advocates such as Stephen Spaulding, staff counsel at Common Cause.

“People are able to distort the political process, open doors and be kingmakers simply because of the size of their bank account,” he said. “The threat of the spending just hangs over all the political decisions that are happening on [Capitol] Hill.”

After focusing primarily on the presidential contest, in the final weeks of the campaign, Adelson ramped up his giving to GOP-aligned super PACs active in House and Senate races.

In Virginia alone, Adelson invested $4 million into a super PAC that ran attack ads against Democrat Tim Kaine in the final days of the election.

His million-dollar contribution to a super PAC called the “Hardworking Americans Committee” accounted for the bulk of the money used in an unsuccessful last-ditch effort to defeat incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.

And a GOP-aligned super PAC known as the “America 360 Committee” received $500,000 from the Adelsons as it touted incumbent Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., and criticized Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren in telephone calls and mailings.

Adelson’s donations to super PACs — which can accept unlimited donations from individuals, corporations and unions — set a new standard in political giving.

Adelson is a staunch ally of Israel and an opponent of unions. He first hit the news when he and his relatives pumped more than $16 million into a super PAC that supported former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s failed bid for the Republican nomination for president.

He and his wife Miriam gave $30 million to the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future, which accounted for nearly 20 percent of the nearly $154 million raised by the group.

In late October, the Adelsons also gave $23 million to American Crossroads, their first donations to the group. Crossroads spent more than $90 million in an unsuccessful effort to help Romney oust Obama.

Roughly two-thirds of Adelson’s $93 million went to super PACs that backed just one or two specific candidates. None of Adelson’s preferred candidates prevailed in any of the 10 races in which these super PACs were active.

Earlier this month, a defiant Adelson told the Wall Street Journal that he would spend even more money in future elections.

"I happen to be in a unique business where winning and losing is the basis of the entire business," Adelson told the newspaper. "I don't cry when I lose. There's always a new hand coming up."

Sheldon Adelson's Campaign Investments

Except for defeating an anti-union ballot initiative in Michigan, Sheldon Adelson's Gambling Dollars seem not well spent. We will never know the true amounts spent to impose plutocracy on America, but the collage of articles below should raise alarming questions.

How Much Did Sheldon Adelson Really Spend on Campaign 2012?

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson poured $53 million into the 2012 elections via controversial super PACs to back these candidates. All lost. From left to right, Mitt Romney, Connie Mack, George Allen, Allen West, Joe Kyrillos, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, David Dewhurst and Newt Gingrich. West is demanding a recount, however, claiming 'disturbing irregularities at the polls.'

By Rachael Marcus and John Dunbar, The Center for Public Integrity

Money can't buy happiness, nor can it buy an election, apparently.

The top donors to super PACs in 2012 did not fare well — casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, the No. 1 super PAC contributor with more than $53 million in giving, backed eight losers at this writing.

Adelson was top backer of the pro-Mitt Romney Restore Our Future super PAC, with $20 million in donations. Romney lost to President Barack Obama. In addition, Adelson's contributions to super PACs backing U.S. Senate candidates in Florida, Virginia and New Jersey were also for naught.

The hotly contested Senate race in Virginia attracted $2.5 million from Adelson and Perry, both giving to Independence Virginia, the super PAC supporting former Republican Sen. George Allen. His opponent, Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine, won the seat with 52 percent of the vote.

Adelson also invested in the re-election of Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., in Florida's 18th District, who narrowly lost to Democratic newcomer Patrick Murphy. On Wednesday, however, West's campaign called for a recount, citing "disturbing irregularities reported at polls."

Adelson did score one point with his $2 million contribution that helped sink a Michigan ballot initiative seeking to enshrine collective bargaining in the state's Constitution. Adelson runs the only non-union casinos on the Las Vegas Strip.

See which industries funneled the most cash into presidential race

Adelson’s gamble on Romney
Romney was not Adelson’s top choice. Adelson invested $16.5 million in former House Speaker Gingrich via Winning Our Future, the primary pro-Gingrich super PAC, before the candidate dropped out May 2.

Now the top supporter of Restore Our Future, Adelson has said he is willing to spend $100 million electing Romney and a Republican Congress. The spending has made him newsworthy.
Adelson’s steadfast and occasionally controversial positions on Israel’s national security have also increased his profile in the national media and provided fodder for the opposition.

Idealism or self-interest?

It is impossible to say for certain whether Adelson’s support of Romney is based on idealism or self-interest or both. Adelson’s spokesman refused to comment for this report.

Romney’s tax policies and Adelson’s financial interests are aligned, especially when it comes to tax treatment of overseas profits.

The Romney-backed “territorial tax system” would allow the Sands to bring its future foreign profits back to the U.S. free from U.S. income tax. Romney’s plan also calls for a “tax holiday” that would allow American companies with profits stashed abroad to repatriate them tax-free.

The Sands holds $5.6 billion in in overseas profits, according to its 2011 annual report. Under Romney’s policy, Adelson and his company could repatriate it all for free.

The tax holiday combined with a switch to a territorial tax system would potentially provide a $1.8 billion tax break to the Sands the first year, according to a study from a liberal think tank, the Center for American Progress.

Adelson himself, as majority owner, stands to benefit.

“By a reasonable but conservative estimate, the tax cut he stands to get from Romney’s tax policies over a four-year term would be well over $2 billion,” said Seth Hanlon, the author of the study.

“When you consider he’s going to spend $100 million on the presidential race, the return on investment is more than 2000 percent.”

Bethlehem Sands Casino protest invokes memories of King George III

Massachusetts ‘Gaming’ Future

The Morning Call - November 23, 2012 - Bethlehem Sands Casino protest invokes memories of King George III

In November of 1788, right around the time some confounded colonials were celebrating what they called their 168th "Thanksgiving," King George III finally went off the deep end.

Tormented by the ridiculous principles established by those troublemakers in the New World, he was observed foaming at the mouth as he talked without pause for hours, to nobody in particular, and tried to shake hands with a tree he thought was the King of Prussia.

Who could blame him? This was just a few years after the Treaty of Paris gave the Americans final victory in their quest for things like free speech and the right to (gasp) find fault with a king. And now they were happily celebrating a holiday they invented in 1621.

They were giving thanks for their blessings, and were continuing to disrespect their king. Sometimes they did it in public squares, which, by all that's holy, should still belong to George III.

"Free speech?" we almost can hear him yelling as he took out his sword to whack at another tree he thought was Thomas Paine. "You think these are the times that try men's souls? You think you can go around saying nasty things about your sovereign in public places? Take that, you devil!"

On Thanksgiving eve (2012), the name of King George III popped up once again on the pages of The Morning Call.

A new bunch of troublemakers assembled to redress some grievances at a public plaza known as SteelStacks. They did not care for "deed restrictions" that made it illegal to say anything that was not complimentary about a nearby gambling joint.

They also objected to a ban on any speech that favored labor unions, even though the public plaza is located at what was once the flagship plant of Bethlehem Steel, where much of the American labor movement was created. (I often say rotten things about labor unions, and especially union bosses, but I have not yet held that people should be prohibited from talking about them.)

The story said that Joe Welsh, a lawyer, referred to the American Revolution at the rally and talked about Sheldon Adelson, the Las Vegas billionaire gambling magnate who owns the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem. Welsh, it was reported, "reminded the crowd what happened after King George III trampled on the freedoms of the people in the 13 colonies."

At issue was a 2011 deed restriction Adelson's outfit demanded when it sold a few acres to the Bethlehem Redevelopment Authority, a government agency, so it could create a public area. The provision bans any speech critical of the casino.

Previous stories said Joseph Kelly, the city's director of community development, noted that people have been allowed to protest other things, such as abortion, and they have other public areas for demonstrations, such as the plaza near city hall.

The deed approved by the Redevelopment Authority last year, however, provides that labor unions may not organize in the SteelStacks public area, and it says any activity with a "theme" that casino operators find "offensive" is also banned.

"Mr. Adelson, this is our land," Welsh was quoted as saying at this week's rally.

Bethlehem Police Chief Jason Schiffer was at the rally but apparently did not crack down on the lawbreakers engaging in illegal free speech. He stipulated that his officers would not disperse the crowd. (George III must be spinning in his grave. His officers knew how to disperse a crowd of protesters, as they proved in the Boston Massacre.)

The story quoted a spokeswoman for the Sands empire as saying no one was available for comment. That's a shame, because I'm sure Adelson would be able to make a cogent case for why we should return to the system favored by George III.

Ordinarily, Adelson is not shy about public dialogue. In the most recent political crusades, he sunk tens of millions of dollars into Super PAC spending to help Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and others, although nearly every candidate he backed lost. His attack ads did have some success, however. He helped oust western Pennsylvania Congressman Mark Critz, who worked mainly on behalf of the rabble — working families, military veterans, seniors, etc. And among Adelson's previously favored politicians is U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, a Republican from the Lehigh Valley.

Adelson, who says that anyone who wants the rich to pay more taxes is a "socialist," began his noble gambling casino quest in 1988 by buying the Sands Casino in Las Vegas, and there have been a few bumps on his way to accumulating his $20 billion.

There has been a federal investigation into bribery involving the Sands Corp. and Chinese mobsters, and another problem was a lawsuit brought by Adelson's former CEO, Steve Jacobs, who accused him of promoting prostitution in his casinos.

Anyway, now we have Adelson in Bethlehem, and we'd better not get caught saying anything unflattering about him or his gambling joint on public land in that city.

I have an idea that King George III is looking down from wherever he is now — actually, it might be more likely that he's looking up — and saying how thankful he is for people like Adelson and the politicians who give him everything he wants.

"If there were more loyal Americans like him back in the 1770s, things would have turned out much better," George III is probably saying, "and my gilded statue in New York City would still be there."
