Amandeep Aujla, 30, pleaded guilty to fraud over $5,000 for stealing from Raynor Rentals while he worked there as an accountant.

Court heard that Aujla began gambling in January 2011. A year later, his gambling was out of control.

“He stated that he became caught up in the cycle of gambling believing he would make back what he lost the next time he placed a bet,” read his pre-sentence report.

Court heard that Aujla largely placed Internet bets on sporting events.

From January 2012 to March 2013, Aujla illegally credited his own personal bank accounts 69 times using funds from Raynor Rentals for a total of $126,172. At the time, he’d worked for Raynor Rentals for five years.

In March 2013, Aujla admitted his crimes to his boss.

“This whole series of crimes ended with a spontaneous confession,” provincial court Judge Kirk MacDonald said in his sentencing decision. “This shows an uncharacteristic amount of remorse.”

Similar frauds usually only end when the employer catches on or “police come knocking at the door,” the judge added.

Defence lawyer Edmond O’Neill said that Aujla came to court prepared to pay full restitution to Raynor Rentals. Family members had provided the money to pay back Aujla’s former employer, O’Neill said.

“This is probably the most difficult day in his life so far, but it was also difficult to candidly tell his parents and his wife’s family,” O’Neill said.

After his jail sentence, Aujla will be on probation for two years. During that time, he must take counselling for his gambling addiction. Aujla will also have to perform 75 hours of community service.
