Reason #7 to VOTE NO SLOTS: "Even if the
slots are approved and the racino opens in our town I probably will never set
foot in it." How many times have you heard this from someone who is pro-slots at
Plainridge?
And therein lies the problem. So many of the people who want
the slots say they won't be gambling there. But they're okay with a projected
44% increase in gambling addiction over the first 3 years within 10 miles of the
track. They're okay with the fact that the majority of money pouring into those
machines are from low-roller problem gamblers. And they're okay with the impact
on the families of those problem gamblers. As long as it's not happening to
their family, why should they care?
Plainville is having serious money
problems, but we can't gamble our way into solvency, any recovering gambling
addict would tell you that. And any recovering gambling addict would tell you
that it's foolish to try.
