Two very important Massachusetts casino events next week
Please put these two important events on your calendar for next week.
First, please make every effort to join us for a historic presentation on slot machines and how legendary political leaders approached businesses that cheat and exploit ordinary citizens. The event will include an actual slot machine and will be held on the front steps of the Massachusetts State House on Wednesday, Oct. 29th at 12pm.
Several special guests will be on hand including Melynda Litchfield, National Victims Advocate for Stop Predatory Gambling. Melynda is a former registered nurse in Illinois who for a period of her life was seriously addicted to slot machines after state government located them near her home. After overcoming her slots addiction, Melynda has committed her life to educating others about how slot machines are dishonest and create unfairness and inequality.
We will also be joined by citizen leaders from all of our surrounding states, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and New York, all of whom are working to stop predatory gambling in their own states and are participating on Wednesday to show their solidarity with the movement in Massachusetts.
We encourage you to pack a lunch, invite a friend and bring a homemade sign that helps educate other citizens about government-sponsored casinos. No need to bring a hammer. We have one you can borrow if you feel like exercising your power to help our state live up to its core principles. Please email or call us with any questions (978) 683-4339.
Secondly, the influential Boston Alliance for Community Health is sponsoring a presentation by the Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI) about government-sponsored casinos on Thursday, October 30th at 10:30 am at Northeastern Law School, Dockser Hall, Room 46 (located on the bottom level,) 65 Forsyth Street, Boston. PHAI is one of the top public health law advocacy groups in the country and is headquartered in Boston.
While the public health community has strongly and successfully challenged the tobacco industry as a predatory and toxic industry, PHAI will show the business of casino gambling, because of the devastating public health impacts that localized casinos would create in Massachusetts, deserves the same outrage and action. For more details about the event, please visit here. I encourage you to attend and to spread the word.
See you next week. Thanks for your work.
Best,
Les
