"...casinos will stop at nothing to ensure their profits are protected...."

BOURNE -- If you get a knock at your door today in Bourne, don’t be surprised if it’s someone urging you to vote for a ballot question seeking to ban casinos in Massachusetts.

Organizers of "Repeal the Casino Deal" will be in Bourne today asking voters to support a ballot question Nov. 4 that seeks to repeal the Expanded Gaming Act, Stephen Eisele, a spokesman for the group, said Friday.

The group, which is going up against deep-pocketed casino interests, is hoping to build a grass-roots effort to repeal the casino law, which authorizes up to three full-fledged casinos and a single slot parlor in the Bay State.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is seeking to build a $500 million Indian casino in Taunton, under federal law. That law requires casinos to be legal in a state where an Indian casino is built.

There is also an effort in Southeastern Massachusetts, known as Region C in the gambling legislation, to woo commercial developers. Companies looking to build in New Bedford, Fall River or anywhere else in the region have been given until Dec. 1 to apply.

Earlier this week, the repeal group issued a press release saying that volunteers would be out from the Cape to the Berkshires making phone calls and knocking on doors.

Casino companies are expected to pump millions into Massachusetts advertising in the next three months to fight the repeal.

“We know the casinos will stop at nothing to ensure their profits are protected,” Darek Barcikowski, the repeal-effort’s campaign manager, said.
