Bucks County Courier - Jul 1, 2014 - Bristol Twp. woman sentenced for taking stepson's inheritance
...
Eleanor Leistrum, of Bristol Township, is accused of stealing her stepson's inheritance and blowing it at a Bensalem casino.
A Bristol Township woman was sentenced to at least six months in prison Monday for forging her stepson’s signature on a $150,000 insurance check after her husband died.
Eleanor Leistrum, 48, pleaded guilty in February to theft by unlawful taking. Prosecutors alleged that Leistrum spent the money at Parx Casino in Bensalem, but during her sentencing hearing Monday, Leistrum and her attorney, Jeffrey Solar, denied the money was spent on gambling.
Leistrum said she spent the money on improvements to the family home with her stepson’s agreement. However, Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Finley doubted her claims.
“I don’t find what you told me here today entirely believable,” Finley said, questioning why she would forge her stepson’s signature if he agreed to remodeling the family home.
Stepson Angelo Popovsky was 16 when his father died. He had no idea his father had left him any money until an acquaintance of Leistrum mentioned the inheritance.
Police said they discovered that in 2012 the insurance company issued a check to Leistrum after she opened an account in her and her stepson’s name. She then moved the money into her own account.
Finley ordered Leistrum to serve six to 23 months in prison. Solar said his client paid the balance of the stolen money back to the victim.
