Las Vegas Culinary union members vote to end contract extensions at downtown casinos

LAS VEGAS — Members of the powerful Culinary union have voted to end contract extensions for several downtown and independent casinos.

The union, which represents housekeepers and other hotel workers, is negotiating over contracts that cover about 10,000 Las Vegas workers.

Contracts expired last June. Without the extension in place, workers would have the right to picket, boycott, and strike.

An overwhelming majority of workers voted to end the contract extensions on Thursday night, according to Culinary spokeswoman Yvanna Cancela.

The 17 casinos still in negotiations include the Golden Nugget, the D, Tropicana and the Stratosphere. The union recently agreed on new contracts with MGM Resorts International and Caesars.

On Tuesday, dealers at three Las Vegas Strip casinos approved five-year contracts with Caesars Entertainment Corp. Members of Transport Workers Union Local 721 voted overwhelmingly to ratify contracts for more than 1,000 dealers at Bally's, Paris, and Harrah's hotel-casinos.
