China's steps to combat corruption
The Chinese government has announced a fresh effort to combat increasing corruption within the Communist Party, acknowledging that its fight against what has become a rising source of public anger remained “complicated and arduous”.
Last year, a group of local officials were found holidaying in Las Vegas, the American gambling capital, on “an official trip” after a blogger uncovered details of their travels.
According to the commission, 146,517 officials across China were penalised for corruption in the past year alone.
The government for the first time released a white paper on corruption last month, underscoring the increasing importance of the problem, seen by many as severely weakening the ruling party's legitimacy.
