PALMER, Mass. (WGGB) – One of the four firms vying for the sole casino license in western Massachusetts says that they anticipate reaching an agreement with their host community this summer.

Officials with Mohegan Sun Massachusetts announced Tuesday that they believe their host agreement with the Town of Palmer will be reached in July.

The company adds that with the July timeframe, a binding referendum vote for Palmer residents would be expected in September.

“We are aware of the incredible support this community has for Mohegan Sun Massachusetts; yet we are also sensitive to the fact that Palmer needs to know how the creation of this world class destination will impact life in town. The completion of this agreement will go a long way to help communicate the key plans in that regard,” says Mitchell Etess, CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority.

Mohegan Sun is hoping to build a multimillion dollar resort casino off of Exit 8 in Palmer.
Earlier Tuesday, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno indicated that negotiations were still underway with MGM Resorts International and Penn National Gaming for a host agreement in that city.
Hard Rock is also proposed a resort casino on the property of the Eastern States Exposition.

PALMER, Mass. (WWLP) - Mohegan Sun expects to reach an agreement with the Town of Palmer by July, which, if approved by the Town Council, would allow voters to decide on a proposed casino in September.

In a news release sent to 22News, Mohegan Sun Massachusetts announced Tuesday that they were anticipating an agreement would come sometime in July.

Under state law, casino developers must reach a “ Host Community Agreement” with the city or town in which their resort is to be located, and the residents must then vote in favor of it. The final decision on which casino proposals become a reality are then put into the hands of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission .

“Palmer has been welcoming, supportive and motivated throughout this process,” said Mitchell Etess, the Chief Executive of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority.

“The host community agreement is important to establishing an effective and cooperative working relationship with the town, and a milestone that will enable us to move forward with a referendum vote.”

Mohegan Sun seeks to a resort casino on land they own near Mass Pike Exit 8 in Palmer. They have been proposing the plan for years, even before gambling was legalized in Massachusetts. Following legalization, however, Mohegan now has four competitors for western Massachusetts’ sole casino license: Hard Rock International, which wants to build a casino at the Eastern States Exposition grounds in West Springfield, and two rival Springfield proposals- Penn National Gaming, which wants to build in the North End, and MGM, which wants to build in the South End.
