The Passing of A Maryland Hero Who Abolished Slot Machines

Frank Wilde, who prevailed as the leader of The Maryland Committee to Abolish Slot Machines more than 50 years ago, has passed.

Frank "Buddy" W. Wilde, 90, a life-long resident of Shady Side, died July 4 at home of natural causes. He was born March 1, 1923 in Shady Side, and graduated in 1941 from Southern High School in Lothian. He attended the University of Maryland before enlisting in the U.S. Naval Air Corps, where he served from 1942 to 1945. Buddy worked for the US Naval Academy Fire Department for one year before entering the real estate business with Schwartz Realty, and receiving his broker's license in 1950. He was elected to the Anne Arundel County Board of Commissioners, representing the 7th District from 1950 to 1954. Re-elected four years later, he served as Chairman of the Board from 1958 to 1962. Buddy returned to real estate in Annapolis from 1962 until 1968, when he became involved in the oyster hatchery and research until his retirement in 1994. Buddy was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Shady Side, and the Kiwanis Club of Shady Side. He enjoyed gardening. Married June 19, 1950, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris R. Potterfield Wilde in 2003. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Vernon K. Wilde and Robert C. Wilde. There will be a visitation from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, at the Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Rd., Galesville. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, at the funeral home. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O.
