Questions about Leominster casino
There is going to be a flurry of opinions, facts or fiction and controversy on this proposed plan for slot machines and electronic gambling in Leominster. Watching the televised council presentation with the casino representatives raised several issues with me. These are electronic games and do not require anyone to spin the wheel, deal cards, etc., and only a person going around emptying money out of the slots. That just eliminated a group of people whose profession is dealers. Not only will there be cars but buses taking up spaces and contributing to the pollution factor. Slot parlors are no less than one step up from offtrack betting parlors. You do not bring in the high rollers as in full-fledged casinos who are more likely to spend money in the community. Most slot players are people of limited means; thus preying on their addiction. Gamblers, unlike alcoholics, ruin other peoples lives. An alcoholic only affects himself, and hopefully he is not behind a wheel endangering others. Gamblers will give up their homes to feed their addiction. Outside of moral issues, there is the residential problem. Besides the increase in traffic and car emissions, there really is no tax relief. Whenever a new other business came in, people thought their dreams were fulfilled and the tax burdens would go away. Taxes, like death, is a fact of life. We should not fall into the hole of thinking the casino is going to bring us into utopia and everything will be taken care of. In closing, water is our biggest issue. We have had so many problems, can you imagine when those toilets start flushing and the thousand of gallons being used for cleaning, drinking and maintenance of a large complex, will do to our very limited "good" quality of water? "Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink." MARY ANN GRADY Leominster
