Gambling bookkeeper gets prison for embezzling $1.3 million

Debra A. Davis, 44, pleaded guilty in April to first-degree grand larceny, falsifying business records and offering a false instrument for filing after she was caught writing checks to herself and to cash.
She used the money to finance a gambling habit, pay Erie County taxes and buy a company called Triple Star Towing – named after her favorite slot machine – for her husband. She has been ordered to pay the money back, officials said.
American Stainless, on Clinton Street just west of Bailey Avenue, distributes stainless steel, nickel, aluminum and other metals.
Davis embezzled the money for almost two years, from October 2010 to September 2011.
She was the sixth person in the past 25 years to be convicted of charges brought by the Erie County District Attorney’s Office involving the theft of more than $1 million – a benchmark that warrants significantly greater punishment.
Only one of the offenders – Joseph V. Raymond, who stole nearly $1.8 million in medical supplies destined for Mercy Hospital – made full restitution, authorities said.
