The new commission will oversee public safety issues in Mashpee and in Taunton where the tribe hopes to build a resort casino.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe today announced the expansion of their new Public Safety Commission (PSC). The tribe officially formed the commission on May 22, 2013 with five members. At a July 9 meeting, the Tribal Council unanimously agreed to expand the panel from five to seven members. During the meeting, the council also announced the names of six tribe members who have been appointed to the PSC:
According to Tribal Chairman Cedric Cromwell, the newly appointed PSC members have extensive public safety experience. "In forming the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's Public Safety Commission, we are moving in a direction to enhance and protect Tribal Sovereignty and public safety," said Cromwell.
The PSC will function as an advisory body for the Tribal Council and the Mashpee Wampanoag Gaming Authority, according to the release.
The PSC is tasked with reviewing emergency preparedness and security matters at the tribal, federal and state level. The commission will also reportedly assess the resources of local municipal agencies including the Mashpee Police Department, The Mashpee Fire Department, the Barnstable County Sheriff's Department and the Massachusetts State Police.
As relates to the area of the proposed resort casino in Taunton, the PSC will also be assessing the resources of the Taunton Police Department, the Taunton Fire Department, the New Bedford Police Department and the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department.
The release did not indicate what if any role the PCS will play in the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Court.
