A Bethel Park man stole nearly $37,000 from people who bought new and used cars from Century III Chevrolet to fund his gambling addiction, the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office said Friday.
Robert Francis Heiser, 28, is charged with theft and receiving stolen property. He was arraigned on Thursday and released on $35,000 bond.
Investigators said Heiser, the former finance manager at the dealership known for being “minutes from the mall” along Lebanon Church Road in West Mifflin, told customers to leave the blank payee line or their down payment checks because he planned to use a stamp with the dealership's name. Instead, investigators said, Heiser wrote his name on the line and deposited the checks into his account.
Heiser confessed to investigators, telling them he had a gambling problem. Detectives said Heiser lost approximately $175,000 between August 2009 and last month.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
