TAUNTON —
The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe has voluntarily agreed to a two-week extension of the public comment period for the environmental notification form it filed with the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act.
A consultant preparing the report said in an email Thursday that the tribe agreed to the extension based on public input from a MEPA scoping meeting held earlier in the week at Taunton High School.
Some officials from surrounding towns, such as Middleboro, said the original July 31 deadline to submit public comments did not give them enough time to thoroughly study the anticipated impacts of the proposed project, as it is described the environmental notification form.
The extended public comment period ends Aug. 14.
Under the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act, the tribe is required to file an environmental impact report for the casino.
The first step in the MEPA process was the filing of an environmental notification form, or ENF. The second is for the proponents to file a draft environmental impact report, which will have a 30-day review period. The third is the final environmental impact report, which will also have a 30-day review.
Comments can be submitted to: Secretary Richard Sullivan Jr., Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs, ATTN: MEPA Office, Holly Johnson, EEA #14924, 100 Cambridge St., Suite 900, Boston, MA 02114.
