Adding slot machines at "Twin River" was supposed to save the dying greyhound racing industry in Rhode Island, much like the false promises elsewhere.
In bankruptcy court, local control was lost - hours of operation extended, greyhound racing abolished, debts absolved and much else.
Much like Massachusetts, the Rhode Island legislature willingly accepts rhetoric from the Gambling Industry, no questions asked.
But not U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Arthur N. Votolato!
The judge noted that, in contrast to the “good news” Twin River executives repeatedly shared in court with him, they described the slot parlor’s situation to legislators in recent weeks as “desperate.”
“Twin River’s owners contend the ability to offer traditional casino fare, such as blackjack, is the slot parlor’s only hope of remaining competitive if Massachusetts enters the casino and slot business,” the judge quotes from one media report.
