Government + Gambling = corruption
Paul Davies
There is a fascinating corruption case unfolding in Alabama involving lawmakers, lobbyists and casino owners. The case shows how the intersection of elected officials and gambling can breed corruption.
Underworld figures, bribery schemes and other sleazy deals have long been associated with the gambling industry. It’s a big reason why most states opposed efforts to legalize various forms of gambling. But that mood has been changing in state houses across the country as lobbyists and casino owners have been pushing to expand their interests.
The case in Alabama shows how efforts to expand gambling can lead to some dubious dealings. Last year, federal prosecutors charged four state senators, three lobbyists, a powerful casino owner and developer of a new casino in connection with a broad conspiracy involving campaign contributions in return for pro-gambling votes.
A lobbyist testified this week about his bribes paid to lawmakers. Nine people are on trial in Alabama accused of using campaign contributions to buy and sell votes involving gambling legislation. Beyond the bad public policy of legalized gambling, the case reaffirms the corruption that still surrounds the industry.
