Alabama: McGregor Dictates Legislation

In Massachusetts, the Gambling Industry prepared legislation in 2010 behind closed doors. During the sham legislative debates, the Industry dictated the contents and terms.

How different is Massachusetts from the Vote Buying scandal in Alabama?

Gambling Trial Jury Hears Casino Owner's Calls

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The jury in Alabama's gambling corruption trial has heard tapes of phone calls between indicted casino owner Milton McGregor and indicted legislative employee Ray Crosby, where McGregor told Crosby what changes he wanted made in a pro-gambling bill.

In one call played in court Thursday, McGregor told Crosby not to tell the bill's sponsor, state Sen. Roger Bedford, that he had called about changes. Crosby worked at the Legislature as an attorney who wrote bills for lawmakers.

Prosecutors said Crosby was getting $36,000 a year from McGregor
at the same time he was drawing a state salary of $160,000 annually.

An FBI agent testified Thursday that McGregor had Crosby on his payroll for two years, but Crosby did not report on the income initially on his state ethics forms.
