New initiative looks at gambling addiction
By Richard Rolke - Vernon Morning Star
Gambling addiction has had a devastating impact on some individuals and families and now efforts are underway to provide assistance.
The City of Vernon has launched a responsible gambling initiative.
“We want to get information out about the extent of the problem but also where people can get support,” said Annette Sharkey, with the Social Planning Council, which will administer the project.
“It seems to be a hidden problem. Part of it may be from not admitting it is happening. We want to look at what the issues are in our community.”
It’s believed that three to four per cent of the overall population is at risk from gambling addiction.
Specific demographic groups in the community will be identified.
“Seniors are at risk. We have a higher than average seniors population (in Vernon),” said Sharkey.
An action team of local residents has already provided input into the design of the program, and it will oversee Responsible Gambling Awareness Week events during January 2012 and January 2013.
The $50,000 funding for the two-year initiative has come from the B.C. Lottery Corporation.
“We are creating a model for the rest of the province. This hasn’t been done before,” said Sharkey.
Coun. Bob Spiers , who has been concerned that the expansion of gaming fosters addiction, supports the program.
“It will supposedly help people with problem gambling and I’ll await the results,” he said.
“I’m hoping this will help. It can’t hurt.”
