Alabama: Casino lobbyist: Trouble ahead if phone tapped

Casino lobbyist: Trouble ahead if phone tapped

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The FBI tape recorded VictoryLand casino owner Milton McGregor asking his lobbyist if he was calling on a safe phone.

Lobbyist Bob Geddie answered that he hoped so, because he was in trouble if he wasn't on a safe phone.

Prosecutors played the tape Tuesday as Alabama's gambling corruption trial began its fifth week.

McGregor and Geddie are among the nine defendants on trial on charges accusing them of buying and selling votes for pro-gambling legislation. The case is built largely on FBI wiretaps, including the taped call between McGregor and Geddie from March 23.

During that call, the two talked about rounding up votes for the gambling legislation and making campaign contributions to their political allies.
