With spring looming, area fire departments are planning fundraisers to help offset operating costs.And fire officials say the task is more difficult than ever.
“All I can do is complain a little,” said Mike Wassilchalk, financial secretary of the North Belle Vernon Fire Department. “The state has hurt us ever since they put in gambling and took away smoking, which killed our bingo.”
Wassilchalk said North Belle Vernon's bingo events used to attract 300 to 350 people, filling both floors of the social hall. Now, they're lucky to get 70 to 80 people.
“People are trying to get more money through gambling and the casinos,” Wassilchalk said. “Now they want higher stakes. We can only give away up to $4,000 per night. We're limited, the casinos aren't.”
North Belle Vernon isn't alone.
