No gambling

Letter 3-14, No gambling

March 13, 2014 11:55 pm

I write today with great disappointment in regard to the state senators who have voted "yes" on LR41 CA. This constitutional amendment would allow the four horse tracks and the Indian tribes to have unlimited video gambling machines (horse slots). One of the state senators who voted “yes” on LR41 CA is Sen. Kathy Campbell. This senator who has served on several boards that help protect children in many different areas has now voted “yes” to a bill that would wreak havoc on many families’ lives.

With the push of a button, she has voted “yes” every year for expanded gambling. This is an activity that has ended people's lives by suicide due to the pressure of overwhelming debt. Other families have suffered physical and emotional abuse because of gambling addictions. For Sen. Campbell to be a mouthpiece for peace and to vote "yes" on every single gambling bill throughout her term, sets a double standard and is giving a message all on its own.

How disappointing, Sen. Campbell. We need to welcome Indian communities into our society and address current addiction issues. We should not pass bills similar to LR41 CA that will not only destroy the addicts' lives, but contribute to destroying their families as well. This bill has one more round of voting before being passed. Senators, please vote “No” and leave a legacy you can be proud of.
