Milford Pro-Casino Group Ignores Experiences of Others

A pro-casino group has popped up in town. Their slogan sounds eerily familiar..."Citizen's for Milford's Future," ...similar to Foxwoods' sign slogan, "For a Better Future."

According to its founder, “Now that the host agreement has moved forward to this point, it is incumbent on those who want to see what’s best for Milford to make facts known and get the word out on Foxwoods' behalf,” .....ON FOXWOODS BEHALF?

Foxwoods has been spending a whole lot of money trying to sell themselves to the residents of Milford....and based on what we have seen from other casino referendums in the state, as far as spending goes... WE AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET!!! ...

The people of Milford don't need another Foxwoods voice, they NEED the WHOLE truth and Casino-Free Milford has provided the information that Foxwoods has conveniently neglected to share!

Like if you agree!

Milford resident Michael Kaplan believes it is time for what he sees as a silent majority in town to speak up and come out in support of the proposed casino project.

To that end, Kaplan is starting a group called “Citizens for Milford’s Future,” which will support Foxwoods in its bid to build a $1 billion, 980,000-square-foot resort-casino at the intersection of Interstate 495 and Rte. 16.

“The more I speak to people, the more I’ve found there is overwhelming support for the casino,” Kaplan said. “It’s not as vocal, not as loud and not as heard … but I’m starting to see and hear a lot more support.”

With selectmen voting to sign the host community agreement on Monday and the town preparing to vote on Nov. 19, Kaplan said he felt now was the time to form a pro-casino group.

“Now that the host agreement has moved forward to this point, it is incumbent on those who want to see what’s best for Milford to make facts known and get the word out on Foxwoods' behalf,” Kaplan said.

Kaplan said he has also been concerned about the “misinformation” currently being provided to residents by the Casino-Free Milford group.

“I’m afraid of people making their decision on this with misinformation and the scare tactics of the anti-casino folks,” Kaplan said. “We need people to look at the hard facts … and make their decision on those.”

Kaplan said he sees this as too good of an opportunity for the town to pass up.

“We’re not going to get a second bite at this apple, we're not going to get a second chance,” Kaplan said. “When you see what they can do for infrastructure, the jobs they’ll bring to Milford and the $32 million and $31 million they’re going to pay the town up front and annually, you can’t just turn your back on that money.

“I don’t think the anti-casino people want to hear this, but they are listening to the town,” said Kaplan of Foxwoods. “They’ve been receptive to everything the town has wanted put in. They’ve done that with water, traffic and environmental issues.”

A longtime resident, with a child in the school system and a member of the local Rotary and Chamber of Commerce, Kaplan said he wants to protect Milford’s future as much as anyone in town, and he believes the casino is the way to do it.

“Not just the casino is going to thrive here,” Kaplan said. “I do think people aren’t always going to go to the casino places. They’re going to spend money here and support businesses here.”

Kaplan said he is still in the process of forming the group and will then begin planning events and other actions to support Foxwoods in the town-wide vote set for Nov. 19.
