“It's a business model based on citizens to lose money.”

'Casinos are awesome!' NY politicians dress up language for ballot referendum

Charlie Butts (OneNewsNow.com) Monday, September 23, 2013

An expert on the harms of gambling believes New Yorkers are being conned into amending the state constitution to allow gambling casinos.
New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, which opposes the measure, suggests the ballot language almost guarantees a “yes” vote.

Les Bernal heads Stop Predatory Gambling and he agrees with that belief.

“The people of New York are not standing up and demanding casinos,” says Bernal. “This is being forced on them by a partnership between powerful gambling interests in a partnership with state government, and it's completely out of control…”

New York politicians know there is no support for casinos, “which is why they had to rig the ballot language,” Bernal claims.

According to The Associated Press, the referendum language was changed from an earlier version that asked simply if the amendment should be approved to “authorize seven casinos in New York State.” The new, beefed-up version claims that allowing the seven casinos would promote job growth, increase “aid” to schools, and permit local governments to lower their property taxes because of the new revenues generated.

“It has more spin than a roulette wheel,” an opponent of the measure said of the new language.
In other states that have allowed casinos, says Bernal, gambling has drained school revenues and property taxes, and increased property taxes.

“It's a gimmick,” says the casino opponent. “It's a business model based on citizens to lose money.”

Government takes a little slice of the revenue while gambling corporations pocket the much larger slice.

To avoid being victimized, Bernal suggests New Yorkers become educated on the truth of gambling and then vote “no” in November.
