Concern over slots proposal
The town will send a letter to Penn National Gaming Inc. and declare itself a community affected by the company’s proposal to purchase the Plainridge Racecourse and secure a state license to operate slot machines. Massachusetts gaming law requires casino operators to identify surrounding communities that may be affected by their operations and negotiate agreements that address such problems as traffic. Selectmen met with members of the Foxborough Racino Review Committee on Tuesday to discuss next steps after Plainville voters overwhelmingly endorsed the gaming proposal in a recent binding referendum. Committee members have determined that Foxborough can expect a 5 percent spike in problem gambling, along with increased drunk driving, bankruptcies, and divorces, according to a letter from the committee to the five-member board.
