Underdogs sometimes win

I only send along an email when there is important news or there is an opportunity for you to make a difference. I thought it was necessary to briefly update you as we near the end of the year about the progress we've made towards achieving our mission of getting government out of gambling:

1) We received major national and state-level media spotlighting how government's experiment with gambling has failed and we will be intensifying it even more next year. You can read the coverage here.

2) We collected more than 1000 signatories thus far to An American Declaration on Government and Gambling and the list is growing every day. Manifestos are a powerful catalyst and all great movements are built upon one. An American Declaration on Government and Gambling is our manifesto. It is a public declaration of our principles and intentions. It explains why we are so passionate about getting government out of the gambling business, leading us to and pursue a higher, more hopeful vision of the path to American prosperity. If you have not done so already, please become a signatory to An American Declaration right now. You can read it here and become a signatory here.

3) We helped educate Congress and the nation's media about why they should oppose efforts to legalize "Facebook casinos" and internet gambling. Proponents announced last week they were dropping their efforts for 2012.

4) We launched three state chapters in 2012 - SPG New Mexico, SPG Texas and SPG Oklahoma- with two more scheduled to be operating by Spring 2013. If you want to help launch a chapter in your state, please contact us.

5) We developed an organization built on trustworthy footing, both financially and operationally. We have earned the 2012 GuideStar Exchange Seal awarded to organizations who have demonstrated nonprofit transparency and accountability. View our Guidestar profile here. Our Form 990s, which are the financial statements we file with the IRS, can be found here.

6) We operate a content-rich website with the latest information on government's gambling program and how it has failed America.

7) Most importantly, we have an intelligent, savvy and principled plan for how to change government's gambling program as we know it.

If you support our mission and the work we do, please make a generous end-of-year, tax-deductible donation of $10 or whatever you can afford. Donate now by clicking here.

To make a bigger difference, please become a Sustaining Donor because your ongoing, reliable support provides a level of financial stability that fortifies our impact and effectiveness, whether it's $3 a week, $10 a week, or $25 a week.

If you would like to discuss making a year-end tax-free distribution from your IRA account, please contact us at (202) 567-6996.

As you select your charitable donations, please act on your conscience and make supporting our mission one of your priorities.

With much appreciation,

Les Bernal
