While no one outside the IRS knows exactly what triggers an audit, Gerson says gambling wins of a few thousand dollars are unlikely to be a flag, even for those who claim a deduction for gambling losses.
“Frankly, I think the IRS doesn't bother with this because they know almost everybody loses,” he says. “It's not the same scrutiny as someone who's self-employed and claiming big entertainment expenses for clients. They understand the nature of what's going on out there for the average gambler who's in a casino or who's playing lottery tickets: Most people are losing.”
