DeBeasi: Casino will tempt addicts

DeBeasi: Casino will tempt addicts

In my primary care practice, I frequently see the devastation wrought by addiction. The addicted individual is constantly faced by simple decisions, which can either assist in their recovery, or can plunge them deeper into their addiction. In Milford, a compulsive gambler may soon be faced with the decision to either drive straight home on payday, or make a brief stop at the slot machine. In Milford, the recovering alcoholic may soon be faced with the decision to either pick up a gallon of milk at the Stop and Shop, or continue down the road for a casino-subsidized drink.

A casino-subsidized drink and the opportunity to gamble can draw others suffering with addiction to our town. These individuals soon face another decision, to either linger, or to get in a car and travel home. For those who choose the latter, nowhere in their journey will their blood alcohol level be as high, as while traversing the roads and highways of Milford.
We, the residents of Milford, can make a decision to help those struggling with addiction, to prevent the development of new addictions and to keep our roads safe by voting “NO” to a Milford based casino on Nov. 19.
