BELCHERTOWN, MA (WSHM) - The Belchertown select board unanimously voted to join the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission's research of how a Palmer casino would impact the region.
The regional study is going to cost more than $98,000.

The cost is being split by 12 towns, including Palmer.

The more towns that join by Friday's deadline, the less each town has to pay.

Belchertown is concerned about a population boost and increase in traffic.

Along with joining the planning commission, the select board also says they'll hire their own consultant if they need to and ask Mohegan Sun for financial help with that.

"It may not be necessary but we want to have the opportunity to be able to do that when something comes up which is not a general problem for everybody, but it's ours and we have to do it," said Bill Barnett, chairman of the Belchertown Board of Selectmen.

Palmer residents vote on whether Mohegan's plan for their town should go forward on Nov. 5.
