LAS VEGAS (FOX5) - The off-duty Las Vegas Metro police officer who opened fire on a suspect outside a Strip casino was identified Wednesday as a 21-year veteran of the department.
According to Metro, Officer Bernard Plaskett, 54, was involved in the Aug. 11 shooting that took place in the parking lot of the Excalibur Hotel and Casino.
Plaskett is assigned to Metro's Gang Crimes Bureau, according to police.
Las Vegas Metro Police Capt. Brett Primas said the officer was dropping off packages at the hotel when a man jumped into the driver's side of his vehicle.
He said the detective then went over to the passenger's side of the car and ordered the man out.
Primas said the man refused, and the vehicle owner identified himself as a police officer. He said the man then reached to his waistband and the officer fired a shot, hitting the man's wrist.
Primas said the suspect then ran from the scene but was stopped by casino security. The man was taken to University Medical Center and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Plaskett was not injured, according to Metro.
He has since been placed on routine paid administrative leave during an investigation of the incident.
