SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A billionaire gambling mogul and Massachusetts native said "no thanks" to opening a casino in his home state.
Sheldon Adelson lost interest because he thinks the state's plan to develop three casinos and a slot parlor will saturate the market. Some people agree that three casinos in a state this size is too many. Others insist it will increase jobs in Massachusetts.
“I believe that it's going to pull wealth out of the local businesses. It'll harm the community as far as hotels, restaurants. It'll have a negative impact on children and families,” said Pastor Chuck Wimer of Holyoke.
"You figure three casinos, that's over 3000 jobs. A lot of people are out of work and that would dramatically bring down the unemployment rate,” said Tony McGowan of Holyoke.
Two weeks ago Steve Wynn stopped his plans to build a resort in Foxborough because of local opposition.
