Subsidizing Horse Racing

Regardless of location, horse racing is DEAD and demanding subsidies. The arguments are the same.

Racino makes a bad bet
After hours of testimony Monday, a Minnesota Senate committee gave the racino idea the first vote it has seen for years. Unfortunately for backers, the vote was "no." The bill, defeated on an 8-5 vote, would have greenlighted slot machines at racetracks. Supporters said the measure would save the state’s horse industry and pump new life into the racetracks. Opponents warned racinos would suck revenues and jobs away from charitable gaming and casinos. Tom Prichard, executive director of the Minnesota Family Council, added that slot machines are “more addictive than crack cocaine.” -- Jennifer Brooks
