Massachusetts: The Insanity Spreads!

Just because someone you know jumps off a cliff, do you follow?

Maybe it's the rarefied air on Beacon Hill or the water, but government exists to promote the Common Good, not to enslave its citizens to Gambling Addiction.

Gambling Revenues are regressive and short-sighted public policy offered by lazy politicians who fail to conduct their due diligence.

And although Mr. Grossman dismisses the past criticism of Spectrum, it should be noted that Governor "Slot Barns" paid Spectrum $189,000 hard-earned taxpayer dollars for a grossly flawed report. Describing the report as 'overly optimistic' is an understatement. The job projections and the revenues were grossly exaggerated and fanciful.

ONLINE GAMING TASK FORCE HIRES SPECTRUM
A task force convened by Treasurer Steven Grossman to explore the online gaming industry and opportunities in that arena for Massachusetts has hired Spectrum Gaming as its consultant.

Grossman disclosed the hiring during a scrum with reporters following a speech to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. Grossman said Spectrum is due to deliver a report on the potential impact of online lottery sales within 60 days.

“We’re on a fast track to think this all through and establish what makes sense for us. I have concerns about the impact of the lottery,” he said. “If you start to bring credit cards into it, what does it do to the business model of our 7,400 agents who would potentially be negatively affected? I’m concerned about problem gaming for people who use credit cards and overdo it … it can only get worse.” [Huh?]

Grossman said the task force would work closely with the newly constituted Massachusetts Gaming Commission, which is working separately to establish a Bay State casino industry.

“Obviously, whatever we do could have an impact on casinos and slot parlors,” Grossman said. Grossman also said he is confident in Spectrum’s ability to perform objective analysis, despite gambling critics who have raised concerns that the company is pro-gaming.

“Spectrum won the bid fair and square and gave us the best price and the best package of services, so there will always be some who will suggest that the firm you picked may not be objective. I think we felt comfortable with the analytical skill set of Spectrum as well as their ability to take our unique situation – and we do have a unique situation,” he said. ‘I’m confident, as are my colleagues, that Spectrum will do a heck of a job for us.”
