Hoosier Park tightens belt by reducing staff

Officials say layoffs are the result of a downturn in business and a poor economy

ANDERSON — Hoosier Park Racing & Casino has laid off 13 employees due to a downturn in business, poor economic conditions and “ongoing and very aggressive” competition from Ohio casinos.

Jahnae Erpenbach, vice president and general manager of gaming for Hoosier Park, said the employees were offered severance packages, other positions within the company, or outplacement services to help them transition into new employment on Friday.

“Believe me, Hoosier Park would much rather be adding jobs,” Erpenbach said.

The staffing level adjustments were made through a reduction of staff and the combining and changing of responsibilities, she said.

Erpenbach said that because the cutback was made to meet the ongoing business levels of Hoosier Park, customers would not be affected by the changes made in staffing levels.

Hoosier Park employs approximately 1,000 employees at Hoosier Park, she said.

In December, Hoosier Park reported a 3 percent drop in revenue from January to November 2013, compared to the same period in 2012.

In an Indiana Gaming Commission report, Hoosier Park reported a total win of $17,085,600 for 2013, down from its 2012 total win of $17,543,537.

Statewide, 13 casinos reported an 8 percent total drop in revenue in 2013, which is a loss of $13 million from 2012.

Erpenbach said new hires will depend on the growth of the gambling industry.

“I hope we have a successful year,” she said.
