Sunday's postponed tribal election could have changed the casino's
location from Taunton back to Middleboro.
The outcome could change the casino location from Taunton to Middleboro
On Friday, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe announced the postponement of their tribal election due to the at-that-time impending snowstorm and the decision by the Town of Mashpee to close all public buildings over the weekend, therefore eliminating the tribe's polling place.
The Taunton Gazette reports that not only could the vote install a new chairman, it could also change the location of the Tribe's proposed casino resort from Taunton to Middleboro. The tribe currently has 146-acres of land under a purchase agreement in Taunton.
Tribal Chairman Cedric Cromwell supports the Taunton location. He is being opposed by two other candidates, David Pocknett and Richard Oakley. Oakley has said he supports locating the casino resort in Middleboro, according to the Gazette.
The tribe originally reached an agreement with Middleboro in 2007 and two years later, moved its focus to Taunton following Cromwell's election.
The tribe is still waiting approval of the Taunton site by the Bureau of Indian Affair. The BIA also threw out their last agreement with the state because it did not sufficiently give a large enough percentage of the revenue to the Wampanoags.
