SINGAPORE — Revenue from betting and sweepstake duties collected by the Government went up over the last two financial years, and expenditure to combat gambling addiction also rose.
The Government collected S$2.2 billion in betting and sweepstake duties in Financial Year (FY) 2011, up from S$2 billion in FY10. In the first nine months of FY 2012, between April and December, S$1.5 billion in betting and sweepstake duties were collected.
Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who revealed these figures in a written parliamentary reply yesterday, said the collections are channelled into the Government Consolidated Fund and are available for spending for all government programmes, including social programmes to help the less fortunate.
Mr Tharman, who is also Finance Minister, added that the Government has increased expenditures to combat gambling addiction, from S$3.8 million in FY09 to about S$10 million in FY12. This includes setting up the National Council on Problem Gambling, which administers casino exclusion, and implements public education programmes to address problem gambling. The above amount, however, does not include grants that the Government provides to voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs), such as Family Service Centres, to defray the cost of counselling services that the VWOs provide to problem gamblers and their families.
