Ninety drunken driving arrests, 1,448 speeding tickets, 320 seat-belt violations.

The results from 10 weeks of beefed-up police patrols illustrate the dangers facing drivers on Route 24 and Interstate 195.

“Our goal was to make these roads safer by removing impaired, distracted and aggressive drivers on those two roadways, and the numbers speak for themselves,” State Trooper Kenneth Gaetz said Tuesday. “The troopers worked very hard in that area to make the roadways safer for the public.”

State police were to announce the figures this morning at a press conference at a rest area on Route 24 northbound in Bridgewater and outline ongoing measures for patrolling the two highways.

After a string of fatal crashes on Route 24, state public safety officials said on July 26 they would be nearly tripling patrols on Route 24 and I-195 on Friday and Saturday nights through September.

One in every 32 drivers stopped during the 10-week initiative was arrested for drunken driving, said Gaetz.

State police made a total of 90 drunken-driving arrests and one arrest for driving under the influence of drugs during the initiative, which ended late last month, Gaetz said.

Of the 90 drunken driving arrests, 74 were first offenders; 10 were second offenders; and three were third offenders. Troopers arrested one driver, each, for drunken driving with a fourth, fifth and sixth offense, respectively.

Some drunken drivers who were arrested were going the wrong way and another struck a cruiser at a construction detail.

State police said they also ticketed 1,448 drivers for speeding, made 83 other arrests for various felonies and misdemeanors, and issued 75 criminal summons.

State police said they issued a total of 2,810 citations to drivers. They ticketed 320 drivers for not using a seatbelt.

State police deployed the 11 additional patrols on Route 24 and Interstate 195 from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday and from 8 p.m.

Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday, through September. They complemented regular patrols from the Middleboro and Dartmouth barracks.
