Episcopal convention votes against casino gambling

SPRINGFIELD – Clergy and lay delegates meeting Saturday for the 111th Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts unanimously approved a resolution opposing casino gambling in Massachusetts, according to a release from the diocese.
State legislation has approved up to three casino resorts in Massachusetts, including one slated for Western Massachusetts. There are currently three specific sites proposed for Springfield and one for Palmer.
A resolution from the convention, meeting at the Sheraton Springfield Monarch Place Hotel, reads, in part:
“Resolved, that we will undertake efforts to educate our members and our communities about the negative impact casinos will have ...
“Resolved, that we will take action to minimize that negative impact, in particular by opposing a casino in Springfield because of the large number of our fellow citizens made especially vulnerable because of the effects of age, poverty, and addiction in the city; and we will be prepared to help those people who will suffer as a result of this legislation.
“Resolved that every Congregation in the Diocese of western Massachusetts will undertake a period of study, prayer, and conversation around the issue of casino gambling in the light of our Christian faith ...
