University of Maryland to open gambling addiction center

Date: Thursday, September 20, 2012

With more state casinos coming online, the University of Maryland School of Medicine plans to establish a center for people with gambling addictions.

The center will be funded by a three-year, $5 million grant from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and aims to provide statewide services to problem gamblers.

Although the state previously had a gambling telephone helpline and minimal training for behavioral health specialists, the grant will expand training to 1,000 health professionals annually, create a public awareness campaign surrounding the hotline — 1-800-522-4700 — and implement gambling addiction prevention strategies.

The center at 419 W. Redwood St. will carry a library of resources regarding problem gambling prevention and treatment for both the public and health care professionals.

“It’s first and foremost meant to be one-stop shopping,” said Joanna Franklin, the center’s deputy director.

As the state phases in more casinos and and possibly table games, Franklin said new types of gamblers will emerge to play table games — namely younger men, a different demographic than those who flock to the slots. She added it will be important to have treatment options for them.

“If [Question 7] passes we’ll see a shift and a change in gamblers in Maryland,” Franklin said. “A small number of them will get hooked and they’ll need a different type of clinical intervention.”

Question 7 on the November ballot will allow voters to decide whether the state should open a sixth casino in Prince George’s County and expand gambling to include table games.
