First Massachusetts casino license set for 2014
By Mark Arsenault, Globe Staff
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission says it will award a license for the state’s first casino by Feb. 26, 2014, at the latest.
The commission made that announcement at a meeting today. The commission said it was hoping that it could reach that goal earlier.
Industry experts say resort-style casinos take up to three years to build, which means the first casino might not open until 2017.
The gaming commission is overseeing the process of bringing as many as three casinos to Massachusetts under the state’s expanded gambling law, which was passed in 2011. The law also permits licensing of a single slots facility.
