Our take on: A losing bet
A losing bet
Gambling addiction is a big menace on campus. A 2008 study of students at seven major Florida universities found one in five had developed a betting problem or was in danger of doing so.
The study led the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling to launch a program aimed at college students. A $1.75 million windfall for the Altamonte Springs-based council — paid this week by the Seminole Tribe of Florida under its gambling compact with the state — will enhance the program, which is available for no charge to universities.
But so far, only the University of Central Florida has adopted it. That speaks well for UCF, and poorly for the state's other universities.
Given the prevalence of gambling addiction on campus, why wouldn't every university take advantage of this free program?
