Maine Recount

UPDATE: Casino Opponents Seek Recount
11/09/2010 03:41 PM ET
Two of three groups that fought the narrowly-passed initiative say they're delivering signature petitions today to the secretary of state's office asking for a recount.

Two groups that oppposed Question 1 on the ballot, which would allow a casino to be built in Oxford County, are asking for a recount. Oxford Hills No on One and CasinosNO! say they've delivered more than 100 signatures today to the secretary of state's office.

"Because of the closeness of the vote - basically a 50-50 split between Maine voters - we feel we owe it to those who have fought for more than 10 years against casinos in Maine to ensure that the vote result is accurate," says Dennis Bailey of CasinosNo! in a statement.

The initiative won approval in last Tuesday's election by a mere 1 percent margin. The deadline for submitting the recount request was today at 5:00 p.m.

Earlier today, Dan Cashman of the group Citizens Against the Oxford Casino, told MPBN that the group would not seek a recount.
