In what can only be described as a calculated betrayal to the
thousands of Holyoke citizens who, against all odds, catapulted him into the
Mayor's seat barely one year ago -- Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse jettisoned his
campaign vows to oppose a Holyoke casino by, earlier today, announcing his
intent to pursue development of a casino at Holyoke's Mountain Park.
To say this comes a surprise is an extraordinary understatement as Mayor Morse has repeatedly expressed his opposition to hosting a casino in Holyoke, both publicly and privately -- most recently in a full-page letter published in Commonwealth Magazine's October issue in which he laid out some reasons for his intense opposition.
Mayor Morse has scheduled a related press conference for 10:00 am Monday at City Hall and all who oppose a Holyoke casino -- especially those who voted to elect him -- are urged to attend and express their displeasure.
I will make anti-casino signs available to anyone who is willing to attend.
Further, I strongly suggest you contact Alex directly and let him know how displeased you are with his reversal. Alex's e-mail is: alex.b.morse@gmail.com
Should you wish to call or text him, his cell phone number is: 413-210-8208.
The phone number to his office in City Hall is: 413-322-5510
In the Mass Live article (see links below) Mayor Morse said he realized "some people would be disappointed" in him and that he was "prepared for the backlash against him to be fierce". I think we should make it absolutely clear to him that he severely underestimated just how fierce the backlash from Holyoke residents and homeowners will be to his betrayal.
If you care about what living in the shadow of a Holyoke casino will mean to your family, your home and your neighborhood -- please get involved now. There is absolutely no time to waste.
