How many locals should casinos hire?

How many locals should casinos hire?

Gaming Panel asks for comment on casino policy

BOSTON, Mass (WWLP) - The casino industry is projected to create up to 15,000 jobs in Massachusetts, but what’s to stop out-of-state workers from flooding the market and taking those jobs away from local workers? In the coming months, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission will consider to what extent they’ll require casino developers to hire locals in the second step of the two-step casino license application process.

“How we evaluate that part of their application is going to be what we’re going to be working through, the policy discussion on in the coming months,” Mass Gaming Commissioner Bruce Stebbins.

The Commission is considering a number of other policy questions as well, such as if the Commission should make casino licensing decisions region by region or all at the same time; and what information developers will have to disclose in terms of how they’ll impact small businesses.

“[We’re] looking for a facility that will not cannibalize, for want of a better word, the small, many small businesses and other businesses that already exist in the area where it’s going to be,” said Mass Gaming Commission James Mc Hugh.

Some questions will have to be answered immediately, like if there should be no host community agreements with casino developers until those developers have passed the first step of the casino license application process. Public hearings on these policy questions will be held in mid-December, but you can submit comments ahead of time on the Massachusetts Gaming Commission website . Comments may also be submitted via email to mgccomments@state.ma.us with “MGC Policy” in the subject line.

All comments from the public are due by Tuesday, November 27.
