VALLEY CENTER ---- A man who deputies identified as Joe Emmanuel Hernandez, 25, was jailed Friday on suspicion of crimes including attempted murder after an incident that led to an officer-involved shooting outside Harrah's Rincon Casino, authorities said.
San Diego County sheriff's investigators responded Thursday afternoon to a report of a stolen vehicle at the casino, 777 Harrah's Rincon Way, according to a report by Det. Daniel Deese.
Investigators were watching the vehicle when Hernandez walked up to it and got behind the wheel, Deese said. Investigators went up the vehicle and tried to detain Hernandez, who ignored their orders and tried to drive away.
As he was trying to flee, Hernandez struck one of the investigators with the vehicle, causing the other investigators to shoot at Hernandez, Deese said.
None of the shots hit Hernandez, Deese said. The deputy who was struck by the vehicle suffered minor injuries.
After striking the deputy, Hernandez tried to drive over a landscaped median to escape, an official said Thursday. The vehicle got stuck on a hedge, so he fled on foot.
Deputies captured him minutes later in a nearby neighborhood, the official said.
Hernandez was jailed Friday at the Vista Detention Center on suspicion of attempted murder, vehicle theft, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended driver's license, according to jail records.
