Alabama casino developer has rough 1st week in Montgomery jail
OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) — Country Crossing casino developer Ronnie Gilley had a rough first week in jail.
Gilley was wearing an orange jail uniform and handcuffs when he appeared at a court hearing Tuesday in Opelika for the 10 defendants in Alabama's gambling corruption case.
His attorney, Doug Jones, said, "He can't sleep. He can't concentrate."
Jones said having Gilley confined at the Montgomery city jail is exacerbating preparations for his trial on bribery and conspiracy charges.
A federal judge ordered Gilley to jail Feb. 7 after ruling that he tried to corruptly influence former Country Crossing lobbyist Jarrod Massey by offering him a financial interest in the casino if he would not plead guilty in the case.
