Oil tycoon Liu Han was executed today after being sentenced to death last May for leading a "mafia-style" criminal organization.
Liu Han was detained in March 2013 and later found guilty of 13 charges, including murder, intentional assault, illegal detention, extortion and casino crimes (all of which he'd initially denied).
After their appeals were rejected, Liu Han, his younger brother Liu Wei and three other accomplices were all put to death on Monday, Hubei's Xinjiang Intermediate Court confirmed on its Weibo account.
Liu Han, 48, was a delegate of Sichuan's political advisory body and head of the mining conglomerate Sichuan Hanlong Group.
In 2012, he ranked 148 on Forbes' list of the richest Chinese businesspeople, and upon being detained, had accumulated assets totaling 6.4 billion USD .
After being sentenced to death, he publicly accepted responsibility for his crimes and said in a statement: "I believe that I should end my life for what I have done."
